The Garden Taylors
Wildlife Pond

March 2006 saw us begin a wildlife pond for a client who wanted to introduce a water feature into the field that he had recently purchased. Here is a picture of the pond in 2010 complete with a new dry stone wall to replace the original earth barrow which had suffered rabbit damage.

The pond is teardrop shaped with a large bird beach and an area of bog planting. We constructed the pond with marginal shelves and used a pre-planted coir log to build a barrier between the pond and bog area.

Ducks are regular visitors and moorhens have been successfully breeding on the pond for the last 3 years. Each year there are scores of damselflies, dragonflies and the electric blue broad bodied chasers.

Digging out the hole.

Once we had excavated the hole we put in a layer of sand to protect the liner.

The pond was was lined with underlay and then a butyl liner. It took about 3 days to fill!

When the coir logs were first installed, the plants were just starting to grow.

The finished pond provides a lovely place to sit and enjoy the dragonfiles.
